During my Fall 2024 semester at Purdue University, I had the exciting opportunity to collaborate once again with the Purdue Contemporary Dance Company. This time, I had two roles: composer and production sound engineer. As a composer, I worked closely with a choreographer to create a five-minute musical score tailored to enhance the dance. My goal was to ensure the music supported the dance, rather than overshadowed the choreography. The choreographer requested a blend of piano, strings, and mallets, and with these instruments, I wrote a piece helping to tell a compelling story. On the technical side, as a production sound engineer, I had the responsibility of setting up and fine-tuning the theatre’s sound system for optimal performance. Working alongside the sound designer, we conducted a thorough calibration using QSYS and SMAART, adjusting SPL, delay times, and EQ to guarantee the system delivered clear, immersive sound to every seat in the house.
